Lance our guide and myself with a hard fighting smallmouthWe have been really busy at DVO shooting new shows for the fall and shooting footage for DVD's over the last two months. But we got a chance to go fishing with a good friend Lance Dunham from LD Guide Service. I love fishing the North Branch with Lance but I hate the long drive. It took my producer and I three and a half hours to make the three hour drive. I left my house at 4am to make it to my producer's home by 5am so we can take his van which was loaded with all of the video equipment we need to travel with to produce the shows but we failed to take into consideration that almost every road we traveled on had construction going on and slowed our travel progress down.
We arrived 30-minutes late and found our guide casting his baits on the ramp. Not a good sign but he reported that he caught 2 small fish right at the ramp. That's also not a good sign and could be the kiss of death and a omen to a day of catching no fish on the river. We loaded up the gear on the jet boat and off we go to the first spot. The river was heavily stainded from recent rains but water temp was 60 degrees in the main river but we had stoped at a small creek that we thought we could find some cleaner and clearer water. I tied on a chartreuse spinner-bait and Lance tied on a black hair jig. 20 minutes later... no fish. "Those two fish Lance caught at the dock had jinks us and we were now in for a long day", flashed thru my mind. Lance pronounced "They're not here fellows, lets move!" and off we went jetting south to another spot.
This is where I would like to say we slayed them but 30-minutes later still no fish. Spot number three... here we come. On the inside of a small island Lanced hooked up and we had the show open on tape. A few minutes later and WHACK! its my turn. We managed to pick the river apart and we squeezed out about 20 fish throughout the next 6 hours. We made our way back upriver to the ramp skimming over some water that was only inches deep. The trip back took about a 20 minutes and it was good feeling the sunshine and wind hit my face as I took in the sights of a beautiful river with no other boats in sight. We did see several times throughout the day some bald eagles and that is a sight I will always remember. What a majestic, regal bird and it was a real treat to see it living his life on the river.
We did the tackle box after we pulled the jet-boat out at the ramp and we were back on the road by 3:15pm and I didn't make it home to 8pm. My work is done for this show but my producer has 3 more days of editing before the show is ready for viewing.
See you on the water...
