Club Profile
The Bergen Bassmasters was formed in 1986 and has since grown into one of the most respected bass fishing clubs in the
state of New Jersey. Affiliated with the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.), the club strives to reinforce the
beliefs of that organization.
The club involves itself with more than just fishing, keeping up to date with youth and environmental issues as well.
Beginning in 1989, the club has held fishing derbies for both the local Cub Scouts and also for the handicapped. The
annual "Outing for the Disabled" has won State awards and receives numerous sponsors including Shell Oil
Company.
The Bergen Bassmasters is the largest BASS Chapter in New Jersey having 36 members and a waiting list for future
members. Monthly meetings are held in Oradell on the third Thursday of each month except December. Club tournaments are
held in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut, fishing 7 qualifying events. The club sends it's top finishers to the
annual New Jersey Top Six Team Tournament.
Bergen members enjoy numerous benefits from the club. There are monthly meetings and a monthly newsletter which
highlights club activities, tournament results, and other fishing related topics. Of course there are the regular club
tournaments as well as casual buddy events and the 2-day weekend Classic.
The Bergen Bassmasters is more than just a fishing club. It is an organization where bass anglers can meet new friends,
learn new techniques, be aware of environmental issues, and give something back to those less fortunate. The club
epitomizes what the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society's Chapter Federation is all about.
To become a member of the Bergen Bassmasters a few requirements must be met in accordance to our club BY-Laws:
-
The angler must be a member of B.A.S.S. for insurance purposes.
-
Be voted on by the membership. Vote shall be by secret ballot and affirmation must be 2/3 of the members
present.
-
Must be 18 years of age.
-
Attend 2/3 of meetings and 2/3 of the club functions each year (exceptions are made in cases of senior members,
the board will decide on exceptions).
-
Probationary, or junior members MUST attend 75% of functions in the first two years of their membership to
remain in good standing.
Bergen has a limited number of roster spots available with the maximum membership being 36. The Bergen Bassmasters have
been maintained at maximum membership since 1991. When an opening occurs, it is filled from the club's registered
observer list based on a merit and participation.
Club Observers are anglers who register with the club. They are placed on the Bergen roster to the Bass Anglers
Sportsman Society, receive a club newsletter, receive a subscription to the BASS Times publication, and receive a
subscription to the Fishing Line (NJ Federation's newsletter). Observers are welcomed to attend all club meetings and
are often invited to fish the regular club tournaments as non-boaters but are eligible to win only the lunker prize. As
stated earlier, all open spots are filled from the oberserver list. The average waiting period to get into the the
Bergen Bassmasters is 1-2 years.
